Meaning of the abbreviations


Please find below explanations to the abbreviations used in the Fact Sheets.


A. Habitat types


FFH Directive
(Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive of the EU)
Priority (particularly worth protection or endangered)
Representativity (the degree of representativity gives a measure of “how typical” a habitat type is, e.g. due to the presence of characteristic species)
A excellent representativity
B good representativity
C significant representativity
D non-significant presence

Status Red List

1 threatened with extinction
2 critically endangered
3 vulnerable
CORINE biotopes (EU Programme for the Coordination of Information on the Environment)

B. Animals

Status Red List

0 (A.1.1.) extinct, extinct in the wild or possibly extinct since 1800
1 (A.1.2.) threatened with extinction
2 (A.2) critically endangered
3 (A.3)vulnerable
4 (A.4) near threatened
B.2 endangered foreign breeding birds (species whose regular breeding areas do not include Austria).

Annex II (Animal and plant species of community interest whose conservation requires the designation of special areas of conservation)
Annex IV (Animal and plant species in need of strict protection)

C. Plants 

Red List
0 extinct in the wild, extinct, or possibly extinct
1 threatened with extinction
2 critically endangered
3 vulnerable
4 near threatened
r! added to 1, 2, 3, or 4: more critically threatened in certain regions
-r not threatened in Austria as such, but in certain regions (at levels 0, 1, 2, or 3)

D. Protection Areas
SPA (Special Protection Area), protection areas under the Birds Directive
SCI (Site of Community Importance), protection areas under the FFH Directive

E. NUTS
Regions in the European Union for regional statistics, based on administrative units of various levels (NUTS 0 to NUTS 5); NUTS 2, for example, relates to the Federal Provinces, NUTS 3 to a group of political districts.
