Contractual Nature Conservation
Economic and other uses are particularly sensitive issues for the establishment and management of a national park.
Contractual nature conservation has made it possible to find step-by-step solutions for the areas of hunting, fishery, agriculture and forestry. In many places traditional trophy hunting has been replaced by ecological wildlife management with the participation of local hunters. In the Carinthian part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, for instance, 22,000 ha of hunting grounds have been leased and traditional hunting has been replaced by wildlife management that is compatible with the national park.In agriculture and forestry, for example, the affected farmers receive compensation payments for the reduction of yield caused by shifting to extensive management in conformity with the national park. Pasture management according to national park standards is also subsidised.
