Nature Conservation in National Parks
It is the principal maxim of nature conservation to allow natural development.
Occasionally, this produces surprising results because “nature” cannot or not exactly be predicted. Therefore, a precise documentation of the development is indispensable, and there should be no regulatory intervention unless it is absolutely necessary.
Furthermore, it is attempted to restore ecosystems that have been changed decisively by human intervention to their original state. The opening of old arms of the river Danube for the restoration of the floodplain dynamism and the promotion of certain forest vegetation in the national parks of the Thaya Valley, Gesaeuse and the Upper Austrian Limestone Alps are examples of such measures.
